Eminent people walk for farmers’ cause December 19, 2009

Scores of political leaders, social workers, youth and student leaders, academicians, former bureaucrats and writers from across the state staged a silent protest dharna under the banner of “Orissa Nagarika Samaj” here today.
While expressing concern on the growing number of farmers’ suicide in the state, they demanded complete waiver of the loan amounts on such farmers, and employment for one member of such families.
The fact-finding team of the Samaj, as well as widows of some deceased farmers, highlighted their plights and maintained that most of them were yet to receive the compensation amounts announced by the state government.
The Samaj also expressed concern on the alleged multi-crore mining scam in the state. The members sought probe by an independent Central agency to bring out the truth of a such scam, and demanded that the full amount of looted mineral resources be collected from the culprits and kept as a welfare fund for the youths of the state.
While seeking stringent punishment for the guilty, the Samaj exhorted the erring politicians and officers to step down owing moral responsibility for the scam.
Among others, senior journalist Mr Rabi Das, former union minister Mr BK Tripathy, Mr Pratap Sarangi, Mr Niranjan Patnaik, Mr Sudhansu Mishra, Mrs Rutuparna Mohanty attended the meeting.
