Outgoing state BJP president Mr Suresh Pujari today said that past regimes of the Congress and the misrule of the BJD had resulted in Orissa becoming the poorest state of the country. He also conceded that the BJP which had partnered the BJD cannot escape its share of the blame.
Due to compulsion of coalition politics, that too, of the then NDA government at the Centre, the BJP state unit had worked as a partner of the BJD, he remarked.
When reporters pointed out that the coalition had snapped due to failure in arriving at a seat sharing arrangement during the last elections and neither side had spoken on corruption or misrule, Mr Pujari turned evasive.
Focusing on the misrule and corruption in the state, he said instances of five people of a family dying due to hunger as had happened in Bolangir district had perhaps not taken place even in Somalia.
“Orissa, under Mr Naveen Patnaik’s regime has become the poorest state of the country with 57 per cent of the population living below the poverty line,” he pointed out.
Significantly, Mr Pujari was non-committal on the demand for a separate Koshal state being voiced by certain sections in western Orissa.
It is for the party to take a stand on such demands, he said before adding: “The BJP believes in formation of smaller states and Mr Rajnath Singh had suggested re-organisation of states”.
Mr Pujari expressed confidence that the new state unit president will be a unanimous choice. He pledged to provide unconditional and uninterrupted support to the new president who is scheduled to be elected on 23 December.
